The reader is invited to a grandiose three-volume monograph by Thomas Bulfinch, first published in Boston in 1855. A fascinating presentation of ancient Greek myths is accompanied by numerous examples from world poetry, which gives the book a truly inexhaustible storehouse of quotes, aphorisms and epigraphs for all occasions. This work is unique in its own way, since the author set as his goal not only and not so much to acquaint the poorly educated American reader with the main mythological plots, but also to show how they should be used, in particular using the example of poetry. Thus, writers, journalists, speakers and lawyers could use colorful mythological images in their speeches. As you can see, the author’s goal here was purely practical and very popular in society. This also presented the Russian publishing house with a rather difficult creative task - to find in Russian poetry correspondences to numerous quotes from Anglo-American authors. We hope the editors succeeded.
