St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is known throughout the world as the protector of the weak and wretched, the orphaned and the offended. He was famous for his extraordinary kindness; he helped people all his life. Moreover, he did this in secret, so that sometimes the person did not even realize that Saint Nicholas helped him. His life is a model of calm, godly wisdom. He lived to a ripe old age and is represented in icons and legends as a wise, gray-bearded old man. Even during his lifetime, Saint Nicholas was known for his miracles. He healed the sick, including his own mother, tamed the elements of the sea, and appeared to people in their dreams, inclining them to pious actions. While still alive, he was able to perform the greatest miracle - raising a dead person from the dead. Saint Nicholas is the patron of wanderers and sailors, merchants and unmarried women. But most of all, Saint Nicholas is known as the patron saint of children. The image of St. Nicholas, giving gifts to children at Christmas, miraculously, secretly placing gifts under the tree, is often identified with Santa Claus or Father Frost. There are many wonderful legends about this image of his good wizard.
