Nobel Prize winner in literature Toni Morrison is the author of nine novels, the most famous of which is Beloved. In 1988, it brought its creator a Pulitzer Prize, and the film adaptation of the book, starring TV presenter Oprah Winfrey, was nominated for an Oscar and was called “one of the best films of the decade.” According to critics, Morrison "not only created novels of astonishing power, but also reshaped American literary history of the twentieth century."
The action of the book "Pity" takes place in America in the 17th century. The owner of a farm lost in the American outback, having made money from the rum trade, builds a huge house designed to become a paradise, but falls ill and dies. The four women left without a man - a widow, an Indian housekeeper and two African-American women (actually slaves) courageously try to save the house, convincing themselves and those around them that they are one family. But happiness is impossible in an unfinished house...
