1871 was a tragic year for Paris and its inhabitants. The government army, having been defeated in the war with Prussia, split into two warring camps, and the national guards seized power in the city. The family of Parisian architect Emile Saint-Clair returns to the capital from the provinces and finds themselves in the midst of a bloody confrontation. The devoted nanny Marie-Jeanne was killed, the middle daughter, eleven-year-old Hélène, was kidnapped, and two officer sons found themselves on opposite sides of the barricades...
