1967, New York, the height of the Vietnam War. One evening, twenty-six-year-old John Donohue, nicknamed Chick, a Marine veteran and a regular at drinking establishments, once again drops into a bar to have a drink with friends. The friends discuss the loss of their comrades, remember the missing and lament the anti-war protests. During the conversation, Chick learns that his friend Tommy is among the missing. Someone from the company comes up with a completely crazy idea: go to Vietnam, find your friends there and give them a can of real American beer! The next morning, inspired by this idea, Chick Donohue, with a bag full of cans of foam, boards a ship to Qui Nhon and sets off on a dangerous adventure that will change his life forever.
