Philosopher Toby Ord, who has studied the problem of global poverty for many years, at various times an adviser to the World Health Organization, the World Bank and other important international institutions, one of the founders of the effective altruism movement, devoted his work to existential risks that can destroy not only the present, but and all the future potential of humanity. In highlighting the major risks we face, Ord cites the words of Winston Churchill, who warned that “those advances in thought that promised immeasurable material benefits to humanity may result in its complete destruction.” Drawing on modern scientific research and a wealth of data, Ord expresses a clear, accessible and eminently humanistic message: he calls on humanity as a whole and on individuals to do their part to preserve our civilization here and now. No matter how great the likelihood of natural disasters may be, we ourselves have created the main threats to ourselves - and only we can prevent them. But we need to act immediately.
