This work can rightfully be called an introduction to the methodology of sound research. Michel Chion is a film and sound theorist, a follower of composer Pierre Schaeffer, one of the first researchers of sound texture in cinema. He owns a number of important works on Kubrick, Lynch and Tati. The subject of this book is not music, film soundtracks, or other forms of isolation of the auditory, but sound as such. Chion consistently analyzes different approaches to the study of sound, so his focus is equally on acoustics, linguistics, psychology, art history, and phenomenology. The work contains a lot of original conclusions, often formed in polemics with other researchers. The author's extensive erudition, interest in modern technologies and special gift of attentive listening attract the attention of readers interested in the harmonies and noises around us to this book.
