One of the most beloved fairy tales of children was recognized as a classic of Russian literature back in the 19th century. Since then, the little horse “with two humps and arshin ears,” the Tsar Maiden, the Miracle Yudo, the Whale Fish, and the Firebird have become an indispensable part of the vivid childhood memories of many generations of readers. The third author's edition (1861) is considered final. In 1941, the fairy tale was filmed by Soyuzdetfilm (directed by A. Rowe). In 1947, at the Soyuzmultfilm studio, based on the work, the famous cartoon of the same name was shot (directed by I. Ivanov-Vano). In 1975, the same director created a new version of the cartoon. The fairy tale caused many imitations, for example, “The New Little Humpbacked Horse, or Old Thomas's Stories about Ivan the Fool” by Vasily Potapov (1852); “The Little Humpbacked Horse, a fairy tale for children, imitation of Ershov’s fairy tale” (1879) by Rostislav Stupishin; “The Jumping Horse” by Sergei Basov-Verkhoyantsev (1906); “A fairy tale about the German Tsar Wilhelm the Cruel: For children, soldiers and people (Imitation of the fairy tale “The Little Humpbacked Horse”)” by A. Stepanova (1915); “Ivanushka the Fool: A Folk Tale. (Continuation of the fairy tale “The Little Humpbacked Horse”)” by L. Makarych (1917); “The Flying Horse: An Aerotale” by Andrei Kruchina (1925), “The Little Humpbacked Horse with Golden Bristles”, etc. Among the modern continuations of “The Little Horse”, noteworthy are “The Return of the Little Hunchback” by Oleg Ershov (a direct descendant of Pyotr Ershov) (2003) and “New Adventures of the Little Humpbacked Horse” (“Novi Prigodi Gorbokonik”) by Ukrainian writer V. Ginodman (Sivobrovenko). On the Internet you can also find very unusual versions of “The Little Humpbacked Horse”: for example, a retelling of the work in the language of “gloka kuzdra”. In 1856, the ballet “The Little Humpbacked Horse” was staged on the St. Petersburg stage. There are several notable theatrical productions based on the fairy tale. Also, recently there have been suggestions without serious evidence that the author of the fairy tale is not Ershov, but A. S. Pushkin or the poet and composer Nikolai Devitte.
