The famous story by Boris Polevoy tells about the Soviet pilot Alexei Meresyev, who was shot down in one of the air battles of the Great Patriotic War. His plane crashed in enemy territory. The pilot himself was wounded, but managed to get out to his own people. Meresyev lost both legs, but set a goal for himself to return to duty and achieved this. The prototype of the hero Polevoy was the Hero of the Soviet Union pilot Alexey Maresyev, and the story was published almost all over the world and is still very popular.
