The main advantage of the book is reliability and honesty. Of particular interest are V. Manuylov’s story “Penalties on the Black River” and M. Kosinsky’s memoir prose, which were not previously published for ideological reasons. The essays by I. Grunsky, L. Weger, S. Shkolnikov reveal the inner world of a man in war, his understanding of the essence of a soldier’s duty, the process of liberation from fear, everything superficial, low that was in him before the baptism by fire. The book is addressed primarily to young people, not knowing the whole truth about the Great War.
