The one-volume travel diaries of the famous French writer, artist and art critic Eugene Fromentin (1820–1876) included two of his books - “One Summer in the Sahara” and “A Year in the Sahel”. Fromentin collected the main material for his books in 1852–1853 gg., when he managed to visit those areas of Algeria that no European artist had visited before him. Fromentin's literary mastery, which was highly appreciated in his homeland by such authorities as Théophile Gautier and George Sand, no less than his art as an Orientalist painter, a successor to the traditions of the great Eugene Delacroix, ensured him a prominent place in the culture of France of the last century.
