Georges Rodenbach (1855–1898) is an outstanding Belgian poet and novelist, belongs, along with Maeterlinck, to the group of symbolist mystics. He was called the “psychologist of cities.” It is no coincidence that in the novel “The Bell Ringer” (1897) the city of Bruges becomes a clockwork mechanism that reverberates in the life of Joris Borluyt with each chime of the bells. He dedicated his life to music and this city. After the death of the chief bell ringer of Bruges, Joris becomes his successor. However, was Borluyt happy, did he live? Only love, forbidden, tragic, sudden love will make him believe in life and fall in love with his city again. And give up everything.
