"The Female Sex" is an extended commentary on Valerie Solanas's half-forgotten play and at the same time a prologue to radical gender theory, which proclaims that "all people are female, and everyone is sick of it." Drawing freely on a wide range of material ranging from psychoanalysis and performance art to pornography and the alt-right, essayist and researcher Andrea Long Chu discusses the intertwining of desire and identity, gender transition as the realization of someone else's fantasies, and the brutal seriousness that underlies all successful jokes.
