Pobedonostsev is one of the largest and tragic figures of the 19th century. At one time, he told Alexander III: “Your Majesty, Russia is on the brink of an abyss.” And the sovereign answered him: “Konstantin Petrovich, when did she not stand in front of her?” The Chief Prosecutor was one of those people who saw this abyss more clearly than many others, and saw Russia’s fall into it.
