“A Town in a Snuffbox” - published in 1834, a fairy tale by V.F. Odoevsky became the first highly artistic science fiction work in Russian children's literature. V. G. Belinsky wrote about this fairy tale: “It belongs to the category of fantastic stories: through it, children will understand the life of a machine, as some kind of living, individual person.” This work revealed a surprisingly subtle understanding of child psychology. Children's literature researcher I.F. Setin noted: “In the everyday life of wealthy Russian families in the first half of the 19th century, perhaps there was no other object that would seem to a child so mysterious, enigmatic, capable of arousing burning curiosity, like a music box. It prompted children to ask numerous questions and made them want to take apart the magic chest to look inside.”
