The world after an environmental disaster. An unknown disease killed the four main crops that fed humanity, and Famine began. A tenth of the six billion have survived, and the main task now is to feed those who remain. Forests have been cut down, all fertile lands have been plowed, and art, education, science and medicine have been sacrificed; in a primitive agrarian society they are unnecessary, dangerous and turn into heresy. Some fifty years are enough for a new Middle Ages to begin, merciless and dense. People are needed again only to work hard, reproduce a new workforce and die on the verge of old age. And only decrepit witnesses of their former life, literate, frightened “smart guys,” can at least try to change something.
