The autobiography of the outstanding German philosopher Solomon Maimon (1753–1800) is a truly unique work, which, according to the general opinion of researchers, has no equal in European memoir literature of the second half of the 18th century. Having made an independent journey from a Polish town to Berlin, from a promising young Talmudist to a philosopher, a companion of Johann Fichte and Immanuel Kant, Maimon left, in addition to a great philosophical heritage, amazing memories, which not only became the most important document in the study of the life and customs of Poland and the Jews Eastern Europe, but are, without exaggeration, a hymn to the Enlightenment and the strength of the human spirit. This “Autobiography” opens the book series “The Legacy of Solomon Maimon,” the purpose of which is to familiarize Russian-speaking readers with his work.
