Almost a thousand Jewish girls - some just over 16 - were collected from all over Slovakia in the spring of 1942. They were told that they were going to work in German-occupied Poland and that their absence would not last longer than a few months. Thus began the first wave of deportations of Slovak Jews to concentration camps. For each deportee, the Slovak government undertook to transfer 500 Reichsmarks to Germany, supposedly in the form of reimbursement for the costs of vocational training and their placement in a new place. In fact, this money served as a guarantee that no one would return home. During 1942, 57,628 Jews were deported from Slovakia; of these, according to available data, no more than 800 people survived. The author was able to recreate the stories of the women on the first train to Auschwitz and their daily life - and death - in an "effective" death factory. This book is evidence of how you can remain human in inhuman circumstances.
