There is in Modigliani’s art - not at all loud, not flashy and not too showy - some special note, tender, trembling and alluring, which from the very first moments sets him apart from the crowd of fellow artists and attracts the eye, forcing him again and again peer into the slightly drooping faces of his confessional portraits, into the mournfully folded eyebrows of his melancholy women and into the empty eye sockets of his silent boys and men, looking somewhere deep and at the same time inside themselves. Modigliani belongs to a happy breed of artists: his art is very stylish, elegant and beautiful, but at the same time devoid of even a shadow of arrogance and snobbery, it is reverent and humane and in tune with the beating of a simple human heart. His paintings are loved in a special way, devotedly, next to them they fall silent in fascination, and together with his slightly exhausted and sensitive women, they seem to dream of a lost and unfulfilled paradise.
