The name of the commander of the Asian Cavalry Division, General Roman Fedorovich Ungern-Sternberg, in the history of the White movement is associated mainly not with military leadership, but with brutal terror in Transbaikalia and Urga. But if it were not for Baron Ungern, whose life, due to various circumstances, was intertwined with Mongolia, part of this country - Outer Mongolia - would probably still remain part of China. At the same time, he himself believed that the liberation of the Mongols from the power of Beijing was only the first step, and his mission was to restore the empire of Genghis Khan to “save humanity.” The author, the famous writer Leonid Yuzefovich, recreating the biography of Ungern, used archival documents, letters and oral stories of people whose ancestors or relatives were drawn into the Baron's Mongol epic. He tried to take a closer look at this extremely controversial personality, but even more carefully at the environment of the “bloody” baron and the time in which he happened to live.[Adapted for AlReader]
