Deya Raad was born and lives in Brooklyn, New York. As soon as she turned eighteen, her family began looking for a husband for her, although she herself dreams of university, not marriage. Her parents died in a car accident when Deya and her sisters were very young - so she kept counting until one day she received a letter from an unknown woman who did not want to give her name, but knew Deya’s family well. This message called into question everything Deyah knew about her loved ones and her own past... A Woman Is Not a Man is a novel about three generations of Palestinian American women torn between the strict morals of a traditional family structure and the desire to determine their own destiny.
