The Age of the Warring States reigns in Japan. Everyone is fighting everyone, fortresses and monasteries are burning, crows are feasting on the battlefields. The warrior monk Kennyo, abbot of the Hongan-ji monastery, can no longer bear to see this horror. He asks Buddha Amida to do something to stop the bloodshed, and the merciful Buddha appears to the monk. The Buddha's gift will change the entire subsequent history of the surrounding lands, turning the Land of the Rising Sun into a Pure Land. Soon, the Pure Land government will establish the Carp-and-Dragon service, whose responsibilities will include trials of special cases related to the Buddha's gift. And a hundred years after the Kennyo prayer, the grandmother of the young samurai from Akayama will die. Her death will mark the beginning of amazing events worthy of going into the official archive.
