A laboratory assistant named Bertha meets the poet Lavrenty Egorov in the hospital. As a result of a car accident, he became disabled and confined to a wheelchair. Bertha nurses Lawrence and becomes his wife. Not broken by physical suffering, Lavrenty breaks down because he cannot provide for his beloved financially. He starts drinking. Bertha leaves home, and Lavrenty decides to commit suicide, seeing no point in living without his beloved. But love turns out to be stronger than both vodka and bullets.
