Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar's brutal Medellin cartel was responsible for trafficking tons of cocaine into North America and Europe in the 1980s and 1990s. The country became a war zone as his hitmen mercilessly killed thousands of people to ensure he remained Colombia's reigning thief. With billions in personal income, Pablo Escobar bribed politicians and legislators and became a hero to poorer communities by building houses and sports centers. He was virtually untouchable, despite efforts by the Colombian National Police to bring him to justice. But Escobar was also one of America's most wanted criminals, and the DEA created a task force to end Escobar's reign of terror. It included agents Steve Murphy and Javier F. Peña. Over the course of eighteen months, from July 1992 to December 1993, Steve and Javier carried out their mission while being targeted by hitmen targeting them for a $300,000 bounty that Escobar had placed on each of the agents.
