Voices of Blood takes place in Miami, a city where “everyone hates each other.” However, as the New Yorker reviewer aptly notes, this book is as much about Miami as Dead Souls is about Russia. Indeed, “The Voice of Blood” is, first of all, a novel about morals and characters; it is a “Human Comedy”, the action of which is transferred to modern America. The novel was published relatively recently, but there are already fierce debates about it: some consider it the pinnacle of Wolfe’s work, others accuse him of insufficient objectivity, bias and even excessive entertainment. Such mixed assessments indicate only one thing - Tom Wolfe was able to interest, surprise and even shock readers, who are once again convinced that they are dealing with a talented novel by a talented writer.
