Legends about brownies, goblins and water goblins have existed in all world cultures since time immemorial. On the territory of modern Scandinavia and nearby islands, evil spirits were first mentioned in ancient Icelandic literature, where the words vätte and troll denote all supernatural creatures, including gods. Swedish folklore is no exception: early medieval ballads speak of dangerous trolls, creepy werewolves and ghosts. The intervention of otherworldly forces is an excellent way to justify your own failures and interpret inexplicable natural phenomena. Underwater currents and whirlpools are nothing more than the tricks of mermaids and mermen. Thunderstorm - the hunt of the gods for forest maidens. The fog is the dance of elves dressed in snow-white outfits. They were afraid and careful of evil spirits: the children did not go into the pool, because the water man lived there, and they stayed away from the deep wells where the “well old man” lived. However, it was possible to come to an agreement with representatives of the other world through rituals: for example, to appease the spirits so that they would ensure a good harvest or good luck in the hunt. This book is a fascinating journey into the world of Swedish evil, as it was once imagined by the ancient Swedes and as their descendants now see it. The publication contains color illustrations drawn based on images from Scandinavian legends and traditions. The publishing layout has been preserved.
