The story “Raphael and His Neighbors,” one of the most mysterious works of the most significant representative of Heidelberg romanticism, was written in 1822, published in 1824, translated into Russian for the first time. It combines the traditions of the novel of education and the novel about the artist established in romanticism. Rafael Santi is shown through the eyes of his servant and student. In the first part we see Raphael in his youth, the second tells about the years of his studies, in the third part, “To the Transfiguration of Raphael,” the mature artist is described. Throughout his life, he is bound by fate with two women and must choose between them, thereby choosing between earthly and heavenly.
