Jack Vance is one of the brightest representatives of American science fiction of the 20th century, winner of the Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy Awards for his “overall contribution to the development of the genre.” Jack Vance’s talent is surprisingly multifaceted, because he was equally penned subject to “classical” fiction, “adventure” fiction, fantasy in all its possible manifestations - and the most incredible, but always successful hybrids of the above genres. By the 1960s, Vance chose, as the setting for his characters, a detailed futuristic Ecumene - the region The Milky Way, populated by humans in the process of cosmic expansion. All his subsequent science fiction stories develop in more or less strict accordance with the conditions of the Ecumene - united only by some general ideas about law and civilization and an ever-expanding federation of worlds, each of which is distinguished by its unique history, its level of development and its own culture. Within the Ecumene, relative security is maintained and, as a rule, commerce prevails. But outside of it, in the Outlands, there can be no question of safety in many places.
