The Crusades are one of the most interesting periods in the history of the Middle Ages. The Holy Wars, which were believed to be sanctioned by God himself, had a significant impact on the nature of political processes in Europe: they determined domestic politics, increased the prestige of the papacy and contributed to the establishment of a more stable state system. Professor Brundage in his book provides a documentary overview of the Crusades. Combining excerpts from seminal works and engaging narrative, the author describes the history of the campaigns, from the great German pilgrimage of 1064–1065 to the fall of Acre at the end of the 13th century. Quotes from the “Jerusalem History”, “History of the Franks” and other documents allow us to take a fresh look at the Peasant Campaign led by Peter the Hermit, feudal campaigns and the formation of Latin states.
