Friends and enemies of the Luther family have left us many written testimonies. Researchers have studied and verified them for centuries. There is hardly another figure from Germany's past whose life has been as thoroughly documented as the life of Martin Luther, and therefore, in many ways, the life of his wife. And if we look away from the incense of flatterers and the poisonous speeches of slanderers and allow letters and documents to speak for themselves, we will see the usual conflicts, illnesses, fears, doubts, complaints and death. We will hear harsh words and bitter irony, but at the same time we will hear words of tenderness, jokes, and songs. It is not at all the ideal of the Protestant priest's house that appears before our mind's eye, but living people who, in everyday life, just like us, often lacked strength and patience.
