The monograph is the first work in world historiography that explores the mechanisms that made possible the coexistence of a religious minority - English Catholics - with the Protestant majority in England in the second half of the 16th - early 17th centuries. The Catholic community is considered in its relationships with English society at different levels: from the parish and county to the court, parliament and the Privy Council, as well as with Catholic communities outside the country. The work follows the principles of micro-social research and focuses on a detailed analysis of the political, social and religious aspects of the life of one of the structural units of the English Catholic community, namely the environment of Viscount Montagu of Sussex. The book is based on an extensive corpus of sources, fully covering all texts, both archival and published, that are related to the history of the Montague family and its environment. For historians, cultural scholars, specialists in the history of religion, and a wide range of readers.
