Polish writer Stefan Grabinski is a prominent representative of Eastern European “chimeric prose.” The unusual and mysterious phenomena that his heroes encounter are always somewhere close to a person, ready to manifest themselves in the most unexpected, often tragic way. The stories from his “railroad cycle” are filled with portraits of drivers, conductors, station managers, often just one step away from madness, the source of which is always a morbid fascination with trains and everything connected with them, and the element of the miraculous, closely intertwined with technology, enhances emotional effect. In “The Book of Fire” the same role is played by the fire element, which has its own life and consciousness, having a terrible and tragic effect on people. This edition includes three collections of Grabinsky’s stories - the debut double collection “Of Rarities. In the Twilight of Faith" (1909), the complete cycle of stories "The Demon of Movement" (1919-1926) and the collection "The Book of Fire" (1922).
