Doris Bachmann-Medic's book examines the complex configuration of modern cultural sciences, which began to take shape in the second half of the twentieth century and continues to change its contours to this day. The author identifies seven paradigm shifts in research focus, or “cultural turns”: interpretive, performative, reflexive, postcolonial, translational, spatial, and pictorial/iconic. The study describes in detail the context of emergence, the main theoretical principles and analytical categories of each of the “turns”, as well as the impact they had on the self-understanding of individual disciplines and the development of interdisciplinary subject areas. Particular attention is paid to the conceptual relationships and intersections between the “turns” themselves, as well as the prospects for their development, including in the light of new challenges to cultural studies - for example, from post-secular thinking, or the “neurobiological turn”.
