Shortly before the explosions of atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, US government and military circles, fearing that Germany might get ahead of them in the creation and use of atomic weapons, sent a reconnaissance group with the code name “Mission Alsos” to the European theater of operations. The task of this group was to collect information, search and seize documentation, equipment, materials and personnel related to the German “uranium project”. The mission included, along with military intelligence officers, scientists of various specialties. The book “Alsos Mission” brought to the attention of the reader was written by the scientific director of this mission, Samuel Goudsmit, and was published in 1946, immediately after the events described in it.
