Paramahansa Yogananda (1893-1952) was an Indian yogi who played a significant role in spreading the knowledge of yoga in the West. Yogananda founded two societies, non-sextan and non-profit in nature - the Fellowship of Self-Knowledge, with international headquarters in the United States, and the Yogoda Sat-Sanga Society in India. He often declared that through the work of these two organizations the liberating message of Kriya Yoga would spread to all parts of the world.
