The appearance of the supersonic fighter-interceptor MiG-31 became for the Soviet Union a real antidote against threats from the air of an external enemy. Already in the early 1980s, NATO assigned it the code name “Super Foxbat” - “Flying Fox”, suggesting that it was a modification of the MiG-25PD interceptor. However, a few years later, this new machine was called Foxhound - “Fox Hound.”
One of the first meetings of the MiG-31 with the fastest aircraft of our time, the SR-71, took place on March 8, 1984. Then a couple of “migs” “sandwiched” the American in neutral waters, and he, without having solved the task, left our border.
The following year, on the island of Sakhalin, a detachment of four MiG-31s performed several demonstrations flights, as a result of which the aviation activity of the Japanese and their overseas partners noticeably decreased. The MiG-31 is often considered one of the most advanced interceptor aircraft of our time, and it is not without reason that it is called “Incomparable” - for good reason.
In the new book by a leading aviation specialist you will find comprehensive information about the MiG-31 fighter-interceptor - its combat capabilities, modifications, for example, those intended for launching spacecraft into orbit around the Earth, and its pinnacle - the multi-purpose MiG-31BM.
