Conversational interfaces are the best way for a machine to interact with us in human language. Chatbots and voice user interfaces are two areas of conversational interfaces. Chatbots are data-driven, real-time engines for interacting with users in natural language and context. Voice user interfaces are controlled by voice and are capable of recognizing speech and responding to users by voice. This book covers both types of conversational user interfaces, developed using APIs for various platforms. It takes a design approach to understand how to design these user interfaces and provides best practices for deploying them.
We'll start by developing a simple bot based on the Facebook Messenger API to understand the basics of their design. We'll then move on to designing a task model to implement complex decisions, such as ordering and scheduling, using the Google Dialogflow and Microsoft Bot Frameworks.
Next we'll work on voice-based user interfaces that can interact with users using speech , using Amazon Echo and Google Home devices.
