China has built the most sophisticated system of total control over the population in the history of mankind. The testing ground for this experiment was Xinjiang, a region in the north-west of the country where Turkic-speaking Uyghurs live. Digital technology has given the state unprecedented powers to surveil and punish, from ubiquitous CCTV cameras with facial recognition to online surveillance and algorithms that can supposedly predict future crimes. Say or do something the authorities don't like, and you could end up in a camp or disappear without a trace. American journalist Jeffrey Cain visited Xinjiang and also spoke with dozens of Uighur refugees - researchers, activists and ordinary people who managed to escape the police state. This book is a unique testimony to life inside a dystopia and a powerful warning about how authoritarian regimes in alliance with technology corporations threaten our freedom. The publishing layout of the book is saved in PDF A4 format.
