Late antique author's epic created by Nonnus of Panopolitan. Nonnus of Panopolis (presumably 400-470 AD) is the author of the last epic of antiquity, the Labors (Acts) of Dionysus. The poem consists of 48 songs with a total volume of approximately 22 thousand verses and tells about the origin and incarnations of Dionysus, his war with the Indus and the Giants. The work contains information about mystical and Orphic cults that are not found anywhere else and serve as our only source about the spiritual life of late antiquity. A significant advantage of the poem is also that it is presented in an artistically convincing form, vivid and accessible to the widest range of readers, despite the complexity of the subject. The publication is equipped with an introductory article and detailed content of all songs, indexes of names and various kinds of realities found in the poem. Interestingly, this author also owns a poetic paraphrase of the Gospel of John (“The Acts of Jesus”), which he wrote after his conversion to Christianity. CONTENTS: Nonnus of Panopolitan (A, V, Zakharov) • Cantos I-IV: praise of the homeland of Dionysus and his ancestors Retelling of the legend of Cadmus.• Canto V: the legend of Zagreus, the first “incarnation” of Dionysus, whose “reincarnation” is Bacchus (reminiscent of the Egyptian myth of Osiris).• Cantos VI-VIII: the birth of Dionysus.• Cantos IX-XII: the childhood of the god .•Cantos XIII-XL: conquest of India.•Cantos XLI-XLVIII: return from the campaign in India, marriage with Aura and birth of Iacchus, the third Dionysus.
