In 338 BC, at the Battle of Chaeronea, Athens was defeated by the Macedonian ruler Philip II and his son Alexander, later nicknamed the Great. However, this event did not mark the end of Athenian history. In the Hellenistic era that followed, Athens remained a significant factor in the newly created power field of powers. With a keen diplomatic sense, Athenian statesmen tried to preserve the greatest possible degree of independence of their fatherland among the constantly changing political and military coalitions. Athens suffered a final defeat only in 58 BC, when the sovereign city was formally turned by Rome into its subject. Nevertheless, as in previous centuries, Athens remained the spiritual and cultural center of the Mediterranean world. Christian Habicht, an internationally recognized historian and professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, gives in this book a long-awaited, comprehensive account of the history of Athens in Hellenism.
