The book by the famous English philologist, historian and religious scholar Eric Robertson Dodds (1893-1979) “Pagan and Christian in Time of Troubles” is dedicated to one of the most interesting periods of the spiritual life of Europe - the time of the formation of the Christian religion, or rather, to the identification of those causes and factors , which allowed Christianity in a very short period by historical standards to become the dominant spiritual and then social force of the declining ancient world. Unlike most scientists who pay attention mainly to the socio-economic prerequisites for the emergence of Christianity or the mystery religions that preceded it, Dodds sets himself the task of restoring the immanent, mental and psychological aspects of the process of transition from the ancient pagan worldview to the medieval Christian one, revealing the hidden depths consciousness and subconsciousness of Mediterranean Man in the first centuries of our era, his fears and aspirations, that is, the psychological basis on which the new religious teaching grew. The methodology used by the author also looks certainly interesting, replete with elements of an interdisciplinary approach, in particular, techniques from the field of psychoanalytic practice. As an appendix, the book contains articles by Dodds written at different times: “Theurgy”, “The Unknown God in Neoplatonism” and “The Astral Body in Neoplatonism", dedicated to magical theory and practice in antiquity.
