India, 1922: rainy season in the remote Sahyadri Mountains, where the tiny principality of Satapur is hidden. It seems that a curse has fallen on the local princely family. Maharaja Mahendra Rao died of a sudden illness shortly after a tragic hunting accident in which his eldest son died. The younger one is still too young to rule the kingdom, so the prime minister, the uncle of the young prince, and the political agent of Britain do it for him on behalf of the two Maharanis of Satapur - the old princess and her daughter-in-law. The noble ladies are in disagreement regarding the education of the young heir, and they need legal help. However, the Maharanis observe purdah and cannot associate with men. Only one person can help them - Perveen Mistry, the only woman lawyer in Bombay. Perveen is determined to bring peace to the princely house and make a sound recommendation for the future Maharaja, but upon her arrival she finds the Satapura palace riven by power struggles and bloody revenge. Too late it becomes clear to her that she has fallen into a trap. At night? And how can she protect the children from the palace's deadly curse?
