Edmund White was born in Cincinnati in 1940. He taught at Yale and Columbia Universities, and the New York Institute for the Humanities. He was a contributor to The New York Times Book Review, Vogue and Vanity Fair. In 1983 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship and an award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.
