Wehrmacht soldier Wilhelm Prüller carefully wrote down in his diary his impressions of the events taking place at the front from the moment he crossed the Polish border until the end of the war. He describes how he fought in Poland, France, the Balkan Peninsula, Russia, and then walked through Europe in the opposite direction. Reporting the details of the fighting, the author paid great attention to the soldier’s life, describing with German thoroughness what he and his soldiers ate, where they slept, and how they spent their leisure time. With particular ecstasy and delight, Prüller talks about how he listened to the speeches of Nazi leaders on the radio and until the very end of the war believed in the “just” victory of German weapons. Prüller’s chronicles are striking evidence of how effectively the propaganda campaign of the Third Reich worked, how successfully it captured minds and hearts of ordinary people, turning the best in people to the service of the worst.
