The fifth novel of the popular Azerbaijani prose writer Garachukh Elchin (Huseynbeyli) tells the story of the fate of an extraordinary historical figure - Oruj Bey Bayat, who in medieval Spain earned the name Don Juan of Persia, a participant in the Great Embassy of the Safavid (Azerbaijani) state, sent by Shah Abbas first for the purpose of expansion connections with European powers. During the execution of this mission, an unexpected metamorphosis occurs with Oruj Bey: he accepts the Catholic faith, participates in enterprises and military campaigns of the Spanish kingdom. Garachukha Elchin followed his route, trying to be imbued with the aura of historical memory and spirit, and built his own artistic version of the future fate of Oruj Bey Bayat. Why did Don Juan of Persia renounce Islam, his original name? What adventures of vicissitudes of fate awaited him in distant Spain among the aristocratic elite, including amorous, courtly plots? The author seeks answers to these questions, involving the reader in his thoughts and searches, simultaneously touching on such current topics as Islam and Christianity, yesterday and today's East and West.
