The main theme of the book is the centuries-old struggle of Christianity with sensual love between a man and a woman, with carnal pleasures. Preaching love as the main value in relationships between people, Christianity at the same time sought to establish the ideal of abstinence and asceticism, trying to change human nature. The book examines the dramatic moments and vicissitudes of the struggle of Christianity with eros: the cult of virginity and celibacy, the ideals of righteousness, physical and spiritual purity, skoptism, celibacy, monasticism, strict canons of Christian marriage.
