The book by critic, literary historian, author and compiler of 16 books by Alexander Rubashkin is dedicated to Leningrad radio during the siege. Using materials from the archives of the Radio Committee and mainly the memoirs of participants in the defense of Leningrad collected by the author, as well as existing literature, the author recreates the atmosphere in which the voice of the besieged and struggling city sounded - its fighters, workers, writers, journalists, actors, musicians, scientists. Expressive portraits are given of O. Berggolts and V. Vishnevsky, Y. Babushkin and V. Khodorenko, F. Fuchs and M. Petrova, as well as announcers, reporters, engineers who gave the voice of Leningrad a deep and strong sound. The book talks about the role of radio and its special place in the defense of the city, about the tragic and heroic period of the history of Leningrad. This work was highly appreciated by radio veterans and its wartime listeners. Radio came into the author’s life before the war. As a boy in Siberia, his family did not have a loudspeaker. Through the door he listened to regular reports from the Information Bureau from his neighbors in the communal apartment. Then at school, standing at the blackboard, he told the class the latest news from the front. I was especially inspired by our victories... The teacher rewarded this information with an “excellent” rating.
