The author of "Lefty", "The Enchanted Wanderer" and "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" was distinguished by great religiosity from childhood, but his attitude towards the Orthodox Church was critical at best - Leskov believed that the church only distracted parishioners from the truth of Christ.
