Anna is a Hebrew name that means “grace.” In biblical times, this name was glorified by the holy prophetess Anna, the mother of the prophet Samuel, and holy Anna the Prophetess, who was present at the meeting of the Infant Jesus by the holy righteous elder Simeon. Saint Anna acquired even greater grace, becoming the mother of the Divine Youth Mary. She was especially revered in Rus'. Many monasteries and churches were named in honor of her holy name and in honor of her conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The name Anna has been very popular in Rus' since ancient times.
