The novel by American writer Angela Carter (1940–1992) takes the reader into the mysterious, magical atmosphere of circus life. A semi-fantastic story about the adventures of the main characters - the aerialist Fevers and the journalist Walser who followed her on a tour of Russia at the end of the 19th century - is presented in a rich, ironic manner. The enchanting world of the circus backstage, the luxurious chambers of the Grand Duke's palace, a prison for women who murdered husbands, lost among the Siberian snows - these are just some of the settings in which the author places the action of his amazing and at the same time openly feminist novel.
